Chatting over with an old colleague during last weekend brings back a lot of memories
In my previous employment, I was attached for 10 years before moving on.
During these 10 years, I've gathered multitude of experiences in various disciplines.
Not just the technical aspects of it, but also the human and religious side of it.
I've been on various overseas trips throughout the years. All in all for overseas trips, I've been to roughly 40+ odd places throughout the world. That's a lot of places unless you're in the aviation industry or a jet-setter.
This old colleague of mine brought up a subject, as many a times mentioned by our ex-boss and could be called mentor to a certain extent. The subject is on workplace ethics. We had a fun discussion on this.
To summarize the point, the ex-boss used to say, as employees we are paid to do things for the employer. This simply means that the time spent during working hours and utilizing company assets that belongs to the employer, and hence he said then, it was 'haram' should any employee 'misuse' this paid time to perform non-work activities. He also added that if the employer consented for 'time-off' then it should be ok. There was some examples given on salary paid and hours worked an such..
Looking at my timelines both on twitter and facebook, it seems that many, who is employed full time, misused this during their working hours. Back then, there were no smartphones with data line, hence staff relies on PCs or Laptops and internet access during the working hours, so perhaps the argument on company assets is non-trivial. But there's still the hours that the employee is being paid for.
Another point that discussed was that we vividly remembered was the ex-boss saying in a management meeting that if the boss can do the activities/tasks that the staff is supposed to do, why should the staff be employed? At that note he (the ex-boss) let us to think and ponder on this point.
After that time we used to joke when asked by the boss or any senior management what are we currently doing... the answer will be 'justifying our pay'
Those were the days.
